Determining the Type of Skate Park Needed in Tosa
The first and foremost reason TSU was formed was to direct skaters off of private and public property which provide the “street skating” elements such as stairs with hand railings, half walls and benches.
At the initial TSU design meeting nearly 30 skaters from Tosa came together to let us know what they wanted to see in their skate park. Conclusions were…
-skaters loved the look of the DC Shoes/Rob Dyrdek Skate Plaza which incorporates “green space” with plants and trees inside the park
-park should suit all ages and skill levels as well as BMX bikers and inline skaters
-various specific skate elements or obstacles including -a double-depth bowl -½ pipe area with spine and ¼ pipes -launch ramp -benches -hand rails -hubbas (stair walls) -ledges -flat rails -transition (tranny)
Benefits of Tosa’s Hybrid Park Concept
- “plaza” elements fill the immediate needs of the street skaters and the community by offering the street skating elements found at the Businesses and Churches currently used by skaters and bikers because they are the only location in which to do so
-“vert” elements not found on the streets that give riders variety and allow them to develop new skills
-“tranny” to keep the riders on their boards/bikes doing tricks and riding, spending less time wearing at their bodies while “pushing” to gain momentum
-skate elements for all skill levels so skaters from all backgrounds can enjoy the park
-general “plaza” design is aesthetically appealing and encourages spectators for community interaction with the skaters and the park
-cutting edge concept will make Tosa unique to stand out among other parks in the US
